It’s a boy! IT’S A BOY!
Moments before entering the doctor’s office, we agreed that we didn’t want to know our tadpole’s gender unless the doctor/RN/sonogram tech/Indian shaman was 100% certain. Once Megan was swathed in sonogram goo and our baby was projected onto a 42” inch flat screen, the anticipation reached a fever pitch.
“Do you want to know the sex of your baby?”
“Yes, but only if you’re absolutely certain what it is.”
“OHHH, there’s no question.”
Really, that should have been the giveaway right there. And, if I don’t say so myself, a massive compliment to his 16-week-old wedding tackle.
[Enter dramatic pause for affect—which really happened]
“It’s aaaa boy.”
My legs, they shot me into the air. My arms, they sprung above my head and commenced moving in a haphazard motion that would signify victory, perhaps in sports or if your squadron leader just annihilated the Death Star. My voice, it bellowed through walls with uncontainable joy and excitement.
I was overtaken by happiness.
As we both were, but I was the one who was mobile enough to celebrate by exploding eight ways from Sunday.
I didn’t have a gender preference going into that office. But walking out, knowing I was going to have a son, was the best moment of my life.
With that, here is our son, Mr. Cash Rockford Ball.

Cash, for Johnny Cash. Rockford comes from The Rockford Files. Why? Because James Garner’s character Jim Rockford is, quite possible, the greatest thing ever beamed from vacuum tubes.
And Ball. You know. After my Dad. Also the greatest thing ever beamed from vacuum tubes. Even if it’s from our one-and-only home movie.
In approximately 24 weeks we get to meet this little wonder. I can’t even begin to imagine what a day that’ll be…

Wonderful! Sons are so hard to come by. Our house is almost all female. When we finally got a male dog, my poor husband was just plain thrilled.
You are going to have so much fun. Daughters are fun, too, but it’s nice that you have a son first.
Good name for good reasons. Do recall that James Garner once played a character named Cash McCall? Rock on, Family Ball!

Well, it looks like James Garner is now 66% our son’s namesake. What’s wrong with that, I ask? Absolutely nothing.
Thanks Texanne!
